In India, jute is often perceived as a low-value, rough textile. Lumière challenges this perception by transforming jute into a rigid, moulded material using tree resin as a natural, biodegradable binder.
By altering its physical properties, from rough textile to solid form, the project shifts consumer mindset and redefines jute as a refined and valuable material through sustainable design.
The Process
Crafting Innovation through JUGAAD
Creating molds can be expensive and complex. Embracing the Indian concept of "jugaad"—resourceful improvisation—we repurposed utensils, plumbing pipes, and vacuum forming techniques. By crafting male and female mold parts from what we had on hand, we made sustainable jute molding possible through ingenuity.
