VLearn

UX for VR is the art and science of crafting immersive, user-centered experiences that seamlessly integrate virtual environments, interactions, and interfaces to optimize user engagement and satisfaction.

Uptale, an immersive training platform, was used to develop a VR training module for GlobalFoundries, a leading semiconductor manufacturing company. These modules not only trained employees on SOP but also assessed their competency through quizzes and other interactive features. The solution successfully eliminated physical constraints in training frontline employees, providing a comprehensive platform accessible to all.

Brief

Creating immersive user experiences that train the users through interactive modules about the standard

operating procedures. Further extending it to evaluate the competency of the user through quiz and interactive exercises.

OBJECTIVE

  • Identify training and business goals by conducting interviews with subject matter experts

  • Determine gaps in existing training areas (e.g. safety, technical, leadership)

  • Consult with your training partner (Uptale) to determine the best immersive technology match.

  • Modernisation of the employee evaluation process through streamlined approaches and technologies.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • User Research:  Conduct thorough user research to understand the target audience, their preferences, and behaviors within the immersive VR context.

  • Information Architecture:  Organize content with coherent VR information architecture for enhanced navigation.

  • UI Design for VR:  Design clear, legible UIs effective in immersive VR using spatial principles.

  • Wireframing and Prototyping:  Create wireframes and prototypes for spatial layout and flow, allowing iterative testing.

  • User Testing in VR:  Implement VR-specific user testing for feedback on usability and comfort.

Challenges

Navigating the UX design journey for a VR project proved exciting. Challenges arose, from working with a remote team across three time zones to learning a new platform from scratch. However, these hurdles turned into opportunities for skill growth, fostering diverse perspectives and culminating in a rewarding final deliverable.

Impact

  • Higher Participation Rate: VR significantly increased employee engagement and motivation, evidenced by higher participation and completion rates in training programs.

  • Risk-Free Practice: Employees reported improved confidence and proficiency in chip-making procedures. VR enabled teaching risky procedures without exposing employees to hazardous environments, ensuring learning in a safe and controlled setting.

  • Consistent Training: VR modules ensured standardized training across all Global Foundries factories, aligning teams and processes globally.

  • Cost-Effective: Despite a substantial initial investment, VR resulted in long-term cost savings by eliminating external trainers and dedicated spaces.

  • Time Efficiency: VR-enabled on-the-job training without workflow disruptions, enhancing time efficiency and employee productivity.

  • Remote Accessibility: VR facilitated consistent high-quality training for global teams, ensuring a standardized learning experience across different locations.

  • Real-time Monitoring: Built-in analytics provided real-time insights into employee performance, enabling timely interventions and adjustments to training programs.
